Historical Examples of the Group of Death

Take a look back at some the toughest groups of the last three decades.

Editor's Update on World Cup 2022:

Qatar 2022 proved to have one of the best and most dramatic group stages in recent World Cup history. Group B, the Group of Death based on pre-tournament rankings, proved to be one of the less interesting groups in relative terms. Favorites England advanced easily, and the US claimed the second spot by beating Iran on the last day.

In hindsight, the Group of Death title must surely be awarded to Group E, composed of Spain, Germany, Costa Rica, and Japan. The Japanese were the surprise group winners, beating both the European powers but inexplicably losing to Costa Rica. The Germans failed to advance for the second consecutive World Cup. In the last 30 minutes of the third match-day, all 4 teams were at one point advancing and going home. The dramatics and a favorite going home will make this group one to remember.
